I’ve been impressed with David Brooks’ series of op-eds in the New York Times recently, especially today’s piece about the link between covenant & community. He discusses how hard it is for people to pursue serious goals when our identities are uncertain, a common situation in today’s fragmented world. Worth a read if you’re thinking about your commitments to friends, colleagues, or even a network you’d like to build. Considering them covenants rather than contracts has advantages. I like this viewpoint, as it seems to allow for more real life to happen without having to abandon various relationships when things get difficult.
